* Softball team eliminated from postseason tourney

The remarkable run of the New Mexico Highlands University softball team is over.

The Cowgirls, who were picked to finish last in the preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference poll, were eliminated from the league's postseason tournament Friday, losing 2-1 to Colorado University-Colorado Springs and 5-3 to Fort Hays State.

Under second-year coach Dave Philop, the Cowgirls more than doubled their win total from the previous year, finishing 22-29. The team qualified for the postseason after finishing fifth in the 10-team league, its highest such standing in four years.
