Santa Fe Visit To Feature Mandala

For the Tibetan Buddhist monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery, grains of sand are charged with sacred meaning.

The monks were touring in the United States during the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan government in exile, encouraged the monks to create special healing mandalas in response to the event.

As part of this year's tour, the monks will be in Santa Fe on May 5 through 10 and will create a mandala like the one they created in Washington, D.C., following the attacks.

To create the mandala, the monks first inscribe intricate geometrical shapes and ancient spiritual symbols on a foundation called a tekpu. …
