Nonprofit Firm May Be Ousted

ESPANOLA Free treatment will continue for Rio Arriba County's drug users, no matter which company wins a new state contract this summer, the state Department of Health reports.

Amistad de Nuevo Mexico, a nonprofit corporation, has provided intensive drug treatment services to more than 700 users here over four years, a foundation spokesman said.

Amistad's contract expires June 30. Examples of services provided include counseling, clean needles and methadone treatment. Methadone is a drug prescribed by doctors and can stabilize users and hopefully wean them from addiction, director B. …
