Funds Go to UNM Science Classes

Lockheed Martin has chipped in $50,000 to help rescue a University of New Mexico science program for elementary teachers.

The gift will pay most of the cost of UNM's Natural Sciences program, a series of classes featuring hands-on science lessons for teachers, for academic year 2003-04, UNM officials said Friday.

The program shows aspiring teachers simple science lessons they can use in a classroom. It serves about 300 education majors a year.

"This gift came as quite a surprise to the college and to me," said Les McFadden, chairman of UNM's Earth and Planetary Sciences Department, which oversees the program. …
