Conflict of Interest Rule Is at Issue

An effort to liberalize University of New Mexico's conflict-of-interest policy hit a snag this week when two regents questioned the need for the changes.

The proposal would allow UNM to enter into contracts with companies owned by university regents, employees or their spouses. Current policy forbids such contracts.

UNM Regents Mel Eaves and Jamie Koch have qualms about the proposal.

"I just personally favor a more strict conflict-of-interest policy," Eaves said. "I want to be sure there are good reasons for these changes, because we are liberalizing the policy. …
