Efterpi "Yiayia" Kalangis

SANTA FE Efterpi "Yiayia" Kalangis, 90, was among the last of an immigrant Greek community that found a home in Santa Fe starting in the early 20th century.

She died Thursday in the home at Don Gaspar and Booth Avenue where she and her husband first moved in the 1930s, said her granddaughter, Kristin Kalangis of Santa Fe.

"She was quite a mentor in the Greek community, a real matriarch for the women, always welcoming anyone into her home," her granddaughter said Friday.

After leaving Greece, Efterpi and her husband, Alex, who died in 1954, first moved to Michigan and then Santa Fe, where Efterpi had a cousin in the restaurant business. …
