Q: What is topsoil? I am asking because I ordered some topsoil from a local landscaping company and it was full of gravel and lots of bigger rocks. Is there a standard for topsoil? Stan Hayes

A: There are at least two definitions of topsoil. One is that it is the top layer of soil. This definition is used in such practices as strip mining where the topsoil must be stockpiled and replaced. They just scrape off whatever is on top and save it to put back when they start reclamation. The agricultural definition of topsoil is the layer of soil that is richer in organic matter and nutrients than the layers underneath. …
