Sex Offender Law To Undergo Needed Review.(Final)(Editorial)

EDITORIALS

Local residents, especially parents, are justifiably frightened by the prospect of convicted sex offenders on the loose.

The nightmare scenario is that a former child molester will repeat the crime, and given the high recidivism rate among sexual predators, government is duty-bound to seek out reasonable protections.

But now that Albuquerque has enacted perhaps the toughest some say the most punitive protections in the country, the courts will have to decide whether they are reasonable.

Citing due process concerns, District Judge Theresa Baca granted an injunction against enforcement of the law pending an American Civil Liberties Union challenge of its constitutionality. …
