Investigator Suspected in Bank Heists Dies in Showdown With APD

The FBI described her as an officer gone bad.

Albuquerque police on Friday shot and killed Karen Yontz, an investigator with the Attorney General's Office, during a showdown outside a fast food restaurant in northeast Albuquerque.

She was suspected in at least two bank robberies, one earlier Friday.

Police cornered her at the fast food restaurant, where they say she threatened to kill herself, then pointed a gun at officers before being shot.

"It's extremely ironic given her level of dedication to law enforcement over the years that this is how it would end," said Santa Fe Police Chief Beverly Lennen.

Yontz, 50, had worked more than 20 years in law enforcement, including more than 12 years in Santa Fe. …
