Though she has performed and made her own many styles of music jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, gospel, even rock 'n' roll Etta James is first and foremost a blues artist.

Still, such a distinction seems unnecessary in her case, other than to make the point that James who performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W. San Francisco St. is simply one of the finest popular music vocalists this country has ever produced.

Anyone who has ever heard her perform her signature tune, the lush "At Last," is well aware of that fact. No matter what material she's performing be it a Duke Ellington jazz standard, a Muscle Shoals Horns-soaked scorcher or a Billie Holiday ballad James has a way of putting her stamp on it. …
