Surprising Monarchs Headed to Postseason

The telltale sign of Manzano's softball rise could be the Monarchs' record: 15 wins this year, up from four in 2002.

It could be in its new field, a work in progress with batting cages along the foul lines and roofless dugouts made of blue-painted concrete blocks.

Or it could be, with prom coming up Saturday, that a weekend series at No. 2-ranked Carlsbad beginning tonight is even on the brain.

"We've come so far, and we're so close (to the playoffs)," says senior shortstop Sarah Hughes. "Right now, it's easier to focus on the game than the prom."

A team dominated by sophomores, yet kept together by four resolute seniors, the Monarchs probably are the state's biggest surprise in prep softball this season. …
