State Says It Has Interested Firms

LAS CRUCES Hopes for a New Mexico spaceport seemed like a Buck Rogers pipe dream two years ago when NASA pulled the plug on the X-33 project aimed at developing a second-generation space shuttle.

But those hopes have been revived by a group of aerospace entrepreneurs looking at other technologies to establish space-related ventures either at the state's proposed spaceport site at Upham, 45 miles north of Las Cruces, or at other sites.

"We have approximately five real customers who have reviewed the space-related capabilities of New Mexico and have expressed their interest in doing some or all of their operations in New Mexico," said Peter Mitchell, executive director of the state Office for Space Commercialization. …
