UC Says It Might Not Bid for Contract To Manage LANL.(Final)

WASHINGTON The University of California might not pursue a new contract to manage Los Alamos National Laboratory after the government's decision this week to put the contract out to bid, the university's president said Thursday.

University president Richard C. Atkinson told a House subcommittee that managing LANL has been a "heavy burden" for the university, but one UC has carried in the interest of national service.

He said the university loses money on the Los Alamos contract, and university officials are frustrated by contentious relations with the Department of Energy, the agency with jurisdiction over the lab. …
