What with the abyss always just around the corner a new national report on the teaching of writing says it is "clearly the most neglected" you snap up hope whenever it shows up on the horizon. So with the Googled report still warm from the laser printer, I went looking for an e-mail that came a few days ago from the Ernie Pyle Mid-School librarian.

"I thought you might be interested to know that he isn't forgotten at the Albuquerque mid-school that bears his name," Patricia Gardner Evans wrote. "For instance, Miss Tybi Scott's study skills class read part of the school's collection of 'Hoosier Vagabond' columns that Mr. Pyle wrote during World War II for examples of the six pillars of the Character Counts program: responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship, trustworthiness and respect. …
