Council To Debate Quarter-Cent Levy

A proposal to put a public-safety tax on a ballot this fall will be discussed by the City Council on Monday.

Most of the nine councilors were noncommittal during interviews Thursday. Several said they would oppose the tax but are reluctant to keep the issue from being decided in an election.

Only Hess Yntema said he will vote against the proposal.

"I can't support it," he said, because the city is using too much of its current funds for "growth subsidies and for recreational and entertainment venues."

The proposal, sponsored by Eric Griego, would put a quarter-cent tax on the ballot in this fall's municipal election. …
