Richardson Skips Cuba Promo Trip.(Final)

SANTA FE Gov. Bill Richardson will not fly to Cuba with members of the New Mexico Amigos, a goodwill group heading to the island nation on Sunday.

While he had planned to go with the group of about 150 community leaders, Richardson, a former United Nations ambassador, said now is not the time. He said he will accompany the group only as far as Miami.

"I don't think it would be appropriate for me to go in light of Cuba's recent human rights actions," he said.

The international spotlight is on the country after recent media reports that government officials have jailed more than 70 pro-democracy leaders, journalists and librarians and executed three men who tried to hijack a ferry heading to the United States. …
