Generally, the extreme music genre known as death metal, so named for its often dark subject matter and for the grinding drums and guitars that are signature to its sound, does not get much mainstream press run, much less critical acclaim.

Much of the time it is warranted, as many of the bands that attempt this form of music come across as just plain silly and lacking in substance.

That's where Karl Sanders, lead vocalist and guitarist of the band Nile, hopes his band's music comes in. Instead of being tied up with what past artists have done with the genre, Sanders, since 1993, has sought to rewrite the death metal books rather than copy what has been done. …
