Centennial of flight.(Wilbur and Orville Wright)

It all started out as sport, a hobby, for the intellectually curious and industrious brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Only later, looking out from the depths of their intense concentration on solving the problems of controlled flight, did they realize they had progressed to the point that success not only was possible but probable and start to consider the commercial possibilities.

Their earliest fascination with flight was a childhood gift from their father, a helicopter-like toy, really a propeller on a stick that would climb vertically when the stick was rubbed briskly between the hands. The young Wright brothers made several larger versions, but as the size increased their success dropped and the effort was abandoned. …
