The European Commission on Dec. 11 decided to open a formal investigation into advantages granted to Ryanair when it set up its first European mainland base at Brussels Charleroi in 2001 to determine whether they constitute illegal state aid. According to the EC, measures provided by the Walloon Region and Brussels South Charleroi Airport included reduced landing fees and ground-handling charges, hiring and training support, route startup relief, joint promotion and advertising and free office space. …
