Kenya Airways CEO Joseph Nyagah; president of IATA.

Deregulation is a subject with which Joseph Nyagah is particularly well-acquainted. Prior to taking over as CEO of Kenya Airways, he had a 4-year stint in Brussels as Kenya's ambassador to the European Community and he is the president of IATA for 1990-91. He regards the EC's program for the liberalization of air transportation as "a scenario of sobering reality that developing countries with small airlines have to stand up to." He says that most of the trends that we see tend to compound the difficulties that such carriers are already facing."

Noting that, "in the light of the uncertainties of future survival for small airlines, there has been a general call for governments to provide more protection for the carriers they own. …
