Aero Lloyd: an itch to cross oceans. (airline is expanding service)

Frankfurt-Established in 1980, Aero Lloyd flew charters for eight years but then expanded into scheduled service. The West German airline is due to begin taking delivery of MD-11 s next year and plans to begin flying to the U.S. and to destinations in the Far East in 1992.

Caravelles were Aero Lloyd's original buy, followed by DC-9-32s, which were intended as replacements for the Caravelles. But traffic grew faster than expected and the aging French airliners are still in service. "We will keep them as long necessary to fulfill our requirements," Friederich Oldenburg, director of marketing and sales, told ATW.

As the market continued to grow, Aero Lloyd needed more DC-9s but none was available, so the MD-83 was chosen, four entering service during 1986-87. …
