Ozires Silva stepped down from the helm of Varig Aug. 19 amid the worst financial crisis in the airline's 75-year history. He was replaced as CEO by Arnim Lore, previously CFO at Varig affiliate Rio-Sul as well as a former director of the central bank and of state-owned oil company Petrobras. Silva, who founded Embraer and twice served as its CEO, joined Varig in May 2000.

Silva's departure occurred as the airline attempted to win a $300 million investment from BNDES, the stare-owned investment and development bank. As part of the restructuring that is seen as a precursor to the bailout, both Rio-Sul and Nordesre are to be folded back into the parent airline. …
