Alitalia Group reported a net loss of [euro]49 million ($48 million) for the first half of 2002, reduced from [euro]260 million lost in the year-ago period. The carrier attributed the improvement to "network restructuring and changes in the production organization [with] greater emphasis on networks and markets with catchment areas for high-revenue point-to-point traffic and the elimination of unprofitable routes."

Membership in SkyTeam contributed to the improvement, Alitalia said, and the bottom line also was boosted significantly by pretax extraordinary gains totaling [euro]117 million, approximately 65% of which was derived from the disposal of the Sigma Business division to Galileo Nederland. …
