DL/CO/NWA alliance ignores bigger threat. (News Briefs).(Brief Article)

The broad marketing alliance announced Aug. 23 between Delta Air Lines on the one hand and codeshare partners Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines on the ocher brings together the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 largest US airlines in a deal aimed at countering a similar pact between flagging United Airlines and bankrupt US Airways.

Although Delta Chairman and CEO Leo Mullin said the agreement "represents an important part of our plan to strengthen our competitive position in today's extraordinarily difficult operating environment," it does little to address structural challenges in the US domestic marker, where low-fare airlines are besieging Delta's traditional strongholds.

Under terms of the proposed 10-year pact, the airlines will codeshare on each ocher's route networks, offer reciprocal frequent-flier programs and coordinate airport and interline activities. …
