Lest we forget--the past can become prologue

As the storm clouds of recession roll in across the U.S. airline system, as fewer passengers are available, thus adding to the uncertainty of employment, it is possible that some old animosities among large jet and small regional airline flight crews could resurface and the fight for jobs in the cockpit can lead to name calling and nasty rhetoric in the press.

I was reminded of this unpleasant period in the history of commuter/regional airlines recently, while doing some editorial research. A letter published in an 1970 issue of an aviation magazine shocked me out of my complacency. The note ranted and raved about commuter-airline pilots of that vintage being less-qualified to handle the tasks of their more-professional jet-flying partners. …
