'Stair-stepping' in among the big boys: Page Avjet took a controlled approach in moving from business-aircraft maintenance to third-party airline services.

Six years ago, when Page Avjet, already known for its completion and maintenance work on business aircraft, made the corporate decision to get into the third-party airline maintenance business, the first thing it did was bring in Walt Nubel as division VP and general sales manager to establish the third-party maintenance center. Already highly experienced from working both with airlines-American and TWA-and manufacturers-Lockheed-Nubel developed a program based on a series of carefully controlled steps.

"We started with products such as installation of hush kits and auxiliary fuel tanks," Nubel said. "We also used our expertise in interior completions, doing work such as an installation for Boeing on the King of Spain's 707. In turn, this led to other work. For instance, we put the interiors in Trump's [Shuttle] 727s, which led to a maintenance contract with Trump. The Trump maintenance base is considered to be Orlando, because Page does their maintenance. …
