Midair gives push to European Single Sky. (News Briefs).(investigation of Bashkirian Airlines and DHL Worldwide collision)(Brief Article)

The July 1 midair collision between a Bashkirian Airlines Tu-154 and a DHL Worldwide 757-200F near Like Constance with the death of 71 people including 52 children provides ammunition to advocates of a Single European Sky. At the same time it likely will be cited by opponents of ATC privatization who claim that it leads to cost-cutting at the expense of safety.

Investigations to date have revealed a series of lapses by the privatized Swiss ATC organization Skyguide, including having only one phone line in operation and one controller on duty at the time of the accident, the other controller having taken a break. Additionally, Skyguide's short-term conflict alert system was out of service for maintenance and the on-duty controller seemingly was slow to recognize the impending conflict. …
