FlightSafety: regional airlines' training partner. (FlightSafety International Inc.) (company profile)

Houston-"I guess it's just not my day," lamented exhausted Ontario Express Capt. Neal Taylor after landing his ATR 42.

Taylor had reason to feel disheartened. In one day, he and crew member Capt. Peter Temos experienced an engine failure on takeoff, an engine fire, in-flight cabin depressurization caused by an unlocked door, a runaway trim system, an electrical fire, hydraulic failure and a complete electrical failure.

The unrelated failures occurred not on an actual aircraft but inside one of FlightSafety International's (FSI) ATR 42 Phase 11 simulators, an $8 million marvel that allows regional-airline flight crews to simulate a number of flight maneuvers and unrelated system failures that would be impossible to duplicate on an actual aircraft. This particular Canadian Partner flight crew was at FSI's Houston Learning Center for two days of recurrent training. $200 million expansion

While the corporate and general-aviation markets have been FSI's "bread and butter," the company now is expanding into the regional-airline training market. Albert L. Ueltschi, FSI's chairman and founder, says the organization is investing nearly $200 million" toward the building of regional aircraft simulators and developing regional-airline pilot-training curricula.

The largest independent flight-training organization in the U.S. has been busy the past year. During last October and November, FSI installed a Boeing/de Havilland Dash 8 Phase 11 simulator adjacent to the manufacturer's Downsview, Ont., factory, and one British Aerospace (BAe) Jetstream 31 Phase 11 simulator at the Advanced Flightcrew Learning Center on St. Louis's Lambert Field, one of three FSI Learning Centers at the airport. in late December, a Saab 340 Phase 11 simulator was delivered to the St. Louis facility. it is the company's second Saab 340 simulator. This past February, FSI's Shorts 360 simulator received its FAA Phase 11 approval.

This year, FSI expects to take delivery of additional Dash 8, Metro 111, ATR 42/72, Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia and Jetstream 31/41 simulators. …
