Sydney-There is something of the underdog about East-West Airlines. Sure, it's owned by two of Australia's largest corporations and big brother Ansett is one half of the country's two-airline policy. But that hasn't made East-West forget that for much of its 43-year history, it has had to kick and scratch and claw for a place in the duopolistic airline industry. Relations with siblings are correct but officials at EastWest note that they are tied to Ansett through marriage, not blood.

That policy served East-West well during the pilots' strike. By de-emphasizing the family tree and maintaining a low profile, the airline did not draw down upon itself the anger that the traveling public feels toward Ansett and Australian. "There is a tremendous reservoir of bad feeling about Ansett and Australian," says a government official. But East-West has sailed through virtually unscathed, observers agree. …
