The short-haul marketplace is changing. From our perspective we needed to lower our costs. The revenue's not about to go screaming up. In order to address that marketplace we needed to go outside of A C and start a separate company with its own cost structure and its own corporate culture.

Steve Smith began his airline career at Air Canada in 1979. He subsequently served as president of Air Toronto, Air Ontario and, between March 1999 and September 2000, president of WestJet Airlines. He rejoined AC last fall to develop and lead the airline's new Calgary-based low-fare, short-haul subsidiary set to launch this summer.
