Management expertise and a clear vision of the future are two qualities Lufthansa German Airlines has in abundance, leading to its second Airline of the Year Award in five years.

Last year was packed with problems for a European carrier in the center of an air traffic crisis exacerbated by an air war in nearby Kosovo as excess capacity pushed yields down and fuel prices climbed. But Lufthansa handled those storms, and more, entering the new century with power and confidence.

For Lufthansa, much of 1999 was about positioning. With short-term conditions not conducive to profit growth, this airline, with minimal profit impact, aggressively established itself in markets that will bear fruit in the near future.
