Brazil's Embraer became the third regional jet manufacturer to break into the Chinese market when it signed a letter of intent late last year to supply 10 50-seat ERJ-145s to Sichuan Airlines. If realized, the order will be worth around $200 million. Deliveries are slated to begin in April.

In December Shandong Airlines placed a firm order with Bombardier Aerospace for five CRJ200s. Hainan Airlines has ordered 19 328JETS from Fairchild Aerospace, of which two have been delivered.

Embraer's order announcement appears to counter conventional wisdom that Asia, specifically China, is not a strong market for regional jets. "Belatedly Asia, like the rest of the world, has discovered that small is beautiful," said Global Aviation's George Hamlin. …
