Air Canada lost C$61 million ($39.6 million) in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, primarily reflecting the impact of the Sept. 2-14 pilot strike that shut down the airline. Revenues fell 8.4% compared with the year-ago period, while operating expenses increased 11.6% (see table next page).

Air Canada estimated that the strike reduced net income by C$133 million. It is forecasting fourth-quarter losses as well, owing to the strike's impact. Additionally, prior to the strike, growth in operating expenses exceeded revenue growth by five percentage points. …
