Aerospatiale Matra and Dasa take a big step along the road to continental consolidation

The dream of a unified European aerospace industry that can compete on even terms with that of the United States remains largely unfulfilled even though France's Aerospatiale Matra and Dasa, aerospace arm of the German-American manufacturer DaimlerChrysler, have merged into a conglomerate called EADS--the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co.

Absent from the Franco-German wedding celebration was British Aerospace, Europe's most powerful manufacturer in the aviation sector and the company that, ironically, started the movement toward a united aerospace Europe. Even more ironically, the new Franco-German tieup just might push BAe away from Europe and into the arms of the US. John Weston, BAe's CEO, told ATW: "All the options are open to us. …
