Boeing was scolded by NTSB Chairman James Hall for not informing the board of the existence of a study conducted for USAF in 1980 that determined "the dominant source of heating" in the center fuel tank of the E-4B, the military version of the 747, was the air-conditioning equipment bay situated directly below the tank. NTSB said the study may have been germane to its investigation into the loss of TWA 800, believed to have been caused by an explosion in the center tank although an ignition source has not been determined. …
