US airline passenger traffic (RPMs) rose 7.8% in Sept. compared to the year-ago period, but with capacity (ASMs) up 10.4% the industry load factor dipped 1.6 points to 69.0%. Year-over-year comparisons are distorted by the effects of the Sept. 1998 Northwest Airlines pilot strike, particularly in the case of international traffic, which rose 15.2% against a 12.9% increase in ASMs. Load factor was up 1.5 points to 77.2%.
