Korean Air is in final stages of negotiations to join the strategic alliance being formed by Air France, Aeromexico and Delta, KAL announced Oct. 29 in Seoul. KAL and Air France expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Thai Airways International when it is privatized. Star Alliance airlines including Singapore, Lufthansa and United also are expected to bid on a stake in Thai.

The South Korean government recently banned KAL from flying to Guam and Saipan for two years and has put a halt to any international expansion for one year. The actions came after the US NTSB cited pilot error as the probable cause of the crash of KAL 801 on approach to Guam in Aug. 1997. Contributing to the accident were pilot fatigue, inadequate training and mismanagement of the radar system, NTSB said. …
