Alitalia, slated to complete privatization by next June, reported a severe slide in first-half net profits, with earnings nosediving to 29.2 billion lire ($15.7 million) from 151.6 billion lire in the 1998 period. Despite an operating loss of 121 billion lire, the airline expects to report a "sizable" profit for the full year, recently estimated at 188 billion lire, down 59% from 1998.

Pointing out that most other European airlines also posted poor interim results, officials said Alitalia's results were still much better than those it recorded over the past decade, when it was nearly always in the red. …
