Boeing a buyer, not a seller at BA.

Boeing's willingness to buy back at least 34 of BA's 51 757s did not translate into the ability to sell the airline the 106-seat 717. Instead, BA opted to stay in the family by ordering 12 A318s worth $470.7 million with options on 12 more. BA chose the PW6000 to power the aircraft and Pratt & Whitney valued the engine order, including options and a fleet-management program, at potentially more than $300 million. First delivery occurs in Jan. 2003. BA already is a customer for the A319 and A320.

BA was seen as the kind of prestige airline that Boeing so far has been unable to attract to the 717, but the A318 was favored on several grounds. …
