With an average lifespan somewhere between those of a fruit fly and a sparrow, alignments between airlines are, in general, not hardy entities. And while the new generation of airline alliances is intended to be far broader and deeper than what came before, it has yet to prove itself to be more cohesive.

Yes, the process remains in the formative stage, with a few major players still choosing sides, gathering teams. While this accretion continues on one hand, an erosion has begun to eat at formerly "cemented" relationships.

Certainly some of this erosion is caused by the attraction of the still-coalescing groups, who are luring away fringe members with hopes of an increased competitive advantage, a reduced threat or a more important role in the group's strategy. …
