United pitches for more business.

United Airlines' decision to create an Economy Plus section of the main cabin with substantially greater seat pitch (35-36 in.) in its domestic fleet does several things:

* Addresses the needs of the long-suffering full-fare passenger who doesn't travel enough to generate the miles necessary for an upgrade into first class.

* Reduces seating in such a way that the airline won't crowd out business fliers.

* Keeps load factor up at a time when Wall Street is nervous about overcapacity.

Under the program announced in early Aug., UA will remove a row of seats from each of approximately 450 jets in order to offer more legroom in 6-11 rows in the forward part of the main cabin. …
