KLM/Alitalia: A 'new industrial model'.(Statistical Data Included)

The agreement outlined by KLM and Alitalia at the end of July to integrate their operations represents the boldest attempt yet to bypass the aeropolitical status quo and create the first true cross-border merger of flag airlines. Because the alliance is being structured as a joint venture, with no exchange of equity, the partners do not appear to risk running afoul of the citizenship rules that prevent true mergers and acquisitions of airlines across national borders. Said Alitalia CEO Domenico Cempella: "This alliance represents a completely new industrial model for air transport in Europe."

EC approval for the deal was received after KLM and Alitalia agreed to allow other carriers access on the key Amsterdam-Rome and Amsterdam-Milan routes, including providing slots and agreeing to interline with new entrants. …
