Earlier this year, British Airways announced a new fleet and network strategy, the bedrock of which was a rationalization of services intended to allow greater focus on the high-yield premium end of the market. As part of the strategy, BA said it was cutting back on the number of cheap seats on offer and subsequently disclosed that it would downsize its fleet in order to reduce its reliance on low-yield passengers to fill up the cabin.

Then in July, American Airlines Senior VP and CFO Gerard Arpey seemingly chastised his domestic competitors for attempting to reproduce last year's record load factors by filling their cabins at the expense of unit revenue. He said American's strategy was to focus on building revenue. …
