Austrian Airlines will decide by year end whether to stay within the Swissair-led Qualiflyer alliance, a decision that could lead to the first fracture in the European airline grouping.

Swissair parent SAirGroup's 10% stake in Austrian "wouldn't be a hurdle," said Paul Paflik, head of airline cooperation at AUA, at an alliances conference in Paris. According to a Swiss newspaper, AUA was angered earlier this year when SAir tried to boost its stake in the airline; as a countermove it encouraged two Austrian financial institutions to purchase All Nippon Airways' 9% stake. …
