Air Alma: As a Canadian Airlines partner, Air Alma serves four Quebec cities including Montreal with three Bandeirantes, a Cessna 404 and a Navajo.

AirBC: Route realignment was the story at the Air Canada partner in 1998. Air Canada in October shifted several of its shorter routes to its Richmond, B.C-based Regional and AirBC in turn shifted routes to its own partner, Central Mountain Air. The route changes freed up a BAe 146 with which AirBC launched a new Edmonton-Denver service. In addition to five BAe 146s, AirBC flies 14 Dash 8s after retiring two last year. During 1999 it expects to initiate a fleet-renewal program.

Air Canada: The winner of ATW's 1998 Passenger Service Award was forced to cope with what President and CEO R. Lamar Durrett called "many challenges" last year and as consequence it wound up with a net loss of $11 million in contrast to a 1997 net profit of $309 million. Revenues fell slightly to $4 billion.

The challenges included a 13-day pilot strike in September, a violent ice storm in eastern Canada, "Nay Canada labor issues" and unfavorable currency fluctuations. To counter its losses, Durrett said the carrier will reduce capacity 1% this year by retiring six 747s and several DC-9s and will reduce staff levels by 1,725. It also has cancelled the remainder of its DC-9 refurbishment program, deferred delivery of four A330s from 2000 to 2001 and postponed a decision on the final phase of its widehody renewal program. On the positive side, it continues to expand its international network and this year is opening new codeshare routes with EVA, Mexicana and British Midland.

Despite the strike, Air Canada managed to post improved passenger traffic numbers, with enplanements rising 5.7% and RPKs advancing 1.9%.

Air Creebec: The Val d'Or-based carrier continues to fly four BAe 748s, two Beech l900Ds, a Dash 8 and two Bandeirantes to 20 communities. …
