British Airways took an embarrassing U-turn with a decision to stop painting its fleet with "ethnic" designs and put the British flag back on the tails. The new designs, introduced two years ago at a cost of [pounds]60 million, were greeted with general derision in Britain. BA said surveys showed foreign tourists liked the ethnic tails but middle-aged British businessmen couldn't stomach them and wanted the Union Jack returned.

Unfortunately for BA, it is the latter group that provides the bulk of its high-revenue business-fare income, and defections from this group to competitor airlines were an important factor in the collapse of 1998-99 profits to [pounds]206 million ($332 million), down 55% on the previous year and its worst result for six years. …
