All Nippon Airways, more heavily dependent on domestic operations than is JAL, reported a fiscal year loss of [yen]6.58 billion ($54.1 million), worsened from a loss of [yen]2.67 billion in FY97-98. ANA cited "intense competition in the domestic market, including the increasing availability of discount fares," for a 1% drop in operating revenues to [yen]903 billion. Operating expenses, meanwhile, rose 2.6% and the airline had an operating loss of [yen]13.2 billion, versus an operating profit of [yen]646 million a year ago.

ANA offered little hope that things would improve in the current year, with operating conditions expected to be "even tougher" as domestic competition increases while international routes show little growth. …
