US Airways said it was boosting pay, benefits and job protections for 9,500 customer service, reservations and ticket sales employees. Pay levels are based on the "concept of parity" with the four largest US airlines plus 1%, the company said. The increases came after a US appeals court overturned a 1997 union representation vote that certified the Communications Workers of America as the bargaining agent for the affected workers.

The raises also followed a controversy involving a new executive compensation program that would have paid US Airways Chairman Stephen Wolf and CEO Rakesh Gangwal up to 500% of their salaries if they met certain performance goals. …
