US airline capacity (ASMs) grew faster than passenger traffic (RPMs) in April, the first time this has occurred in 1999. ATA reported that RPMs rose 2.6% for the month compared to April 1998, while ASMs climbed 2.9%. Load factor declined 0.3 points to 72%.

All of the capacity gains came on the domestic side of the business as traffic rose 3.1% against a 4% rise in ASMs; load factor dipped 0.6 points to 71.9%. International capacity actually declined 0.2% against a 1.1% rise in RPMs and load factor Improved 0.9 points to 72.5%.

The excess capacity contributed to but did not cause a 1.5% decline in average domestic yield for April, marking the eighth consecutive month in which ticket prices fell compared to the year-ago period, according to ATA. …
