Regional airlines record impressive growth in 1998.

Nearly 71 million passengers flew on US Regional airlines in 1998, an increase of 7% over the previous year. Industry load factor was up 2 points to 57%. So stales a survey by Washington, D.C., consultancy AvStat Associates for the Regional Airline Assn. Revenue passenger-miles rose by nearly 14% to 17.42 billion, while the number of cities in North America served by Regional airlines increased to 773 from 766.

Codesharing remains a key factor in the continued growth, with 49 codesharing arrangements now in place between Regional carriers and their Major or National airline partners. The arrangements vary from ownership (3) to marketing agreements (33) between Major and Regional. …
